Warragul Dojo - it’s foundations
Warragul Dojo was founded in 1994 at the Warragul Regional College “small gym” by Sempai Dino Tomisic and Sempai John “Wombat” Clay. Originally it had a small group of followers but they were very dedicated. Wombat and Kali Tomisic were both highly regarded full contact fighters- Kali winning the Victorian Full Contact Knock Down Females Champion title and Wombat placing in every fight. This established the Dojo as a force to be reckoned with in the Full Contact Fight arena and the Dojo has continued this tradition.
Warragul Dojo - Today
For the past 10 years Sensei Paul Cole, 3rd Dan, has run the Dojo with the help from his Black Belts Rachael Cole, Vanessa Bruce and Brendan Drake.
The Warragul Dojo continues to thrive and attract a dedicated group of students; ranging in age from 7years to adult. The training is carried out on traditional lines where there is a variety of skills practiced- emphasis is placed on fitness, discipline and self confidence. The reasons for training differ from those wanting to get fitter and be part of a large and supportive group to those who want to pursue the competition side. The Warragul Dojo is highly respected in the competition arena and its students have won and competed successfully at the highest levels: at State Level , National Level and International level In competition there are two factors, either one or both may be competed in - the full contact fighting and or the Kata which is the pattern performed individually and shows the basic moves taught in Karate.
Full Contact Fighting is a component of Kyokushin Karate it is not mandatory There are also students who prefer never to compete and there is no pressure put on them to compete- personal development is just as important as bringing home the trophies!
All Classes are conducted in traditional format, with all belts (and ages) training together, so while there is no minimum age but the children must be able to maintain a concentration span for 1 ½ hours and be prepared to listen and learn. Very young students are only accepted if they are accompanied by an adult (family member) who is prepared to supervise them and if they can show the maturity to not disrupt the Dojo.
The Dojo has regular visits from other Dojos and Black Belt Instructors and continues to strive to achieve the highest results- both personally for students and in the competition arena
The Dojo is a friendly environment and presents a wonderful opportunity for any person interested in the Martial Arts.
